Couples therapy for neurodivergent relationships in Vancouver

When one or both partners are neurodivergent, generic couples advice often doesn't work. We offer counselling that actually understands how ADHD, autism and giftedness shape the way you communicate, connect, and conflict.

If you're in a relationship with ADHD, autism, giftedness or some combination — you already know that the dynamics are different.

The advice in most couples therapy books, blogs, and even in many therapists' offices was designed for neurotypical relationships. It doesn't account for executive function challenges, sensory needs, emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitivity, or the exhaustion of masking. It doesn't explain why communication feels harder than it should, or why the same conflict keeps happening no matter what you try.

At Cinnamon Counselling, neurodivergent relationships aren't a niche — they're a specialty. We work with couples where one or both partners are neurodivergent, and we bring real clinical knowledge and genuine understanding to this work.

    How Neurodivergence Affects Relationships

Neurodivergence isn't just a personality quirk. It affects how people communicate, process emotions, experience intimacy, and navigate conflict — in specific, identifiable ways.

    ADHD in relationships

    • Forgetfulness and follow-through issues that can feel like not caring
    • Time blindness that affects reliability and shared routines
    • Emotional dysregulation and rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD)
    • Difficulty with conversational reciprocity or listening in conventional ways
    • Hyperfocus on new things (including at the start of relationships) that fades
    • Impulsivity that creates conflict

    Autism in relationships

    • Differences in social communication and reading cues
    • Sensory needs that affect physical intimacy
    • Need for predictability and difficulty with unplanned changes
    • Masking exhaustion — having less to give at home after spending all day performing neurotypicality
    • Literal communication style that can feel blunt or be misread
    • Intense interests that may feel excluding to a partner

    When both partners are neurodivergent

Mixed neurodivergent couples (sometimes called "neurodiverse couples") often have their own specific dynamics — including two people with executive function challenges trying to manage a shared life, or two people with very different sensory and social needs. These couples often feel like no one quite gets what they're dealing with.

    What We Work On

    Communication

Not generic "active listening" advice — actual strategies that work for neurodivergent brains and communication styles. We help you develop shared language for what's happening and find ways to get through to each other.

    Emotional regulation and conflict

Many neurodivergent people experience intense emotions quickly. We work on understanding what drives emotional escalation, building skills for de-escalation, and helping both partners feel safe in conflict.

    Intimacy and sensory needs

Sensory differences, rejection sensitivity, and emotional dysregulation all affect physical and emotional intimacy. We address this directly and without judgment.

    Roles and responsibilities

When executive function challenges affect one or both partners, division of household labour, finances, and planning can become a major source of resentment. We help couples design systems that actually work.

    Neurodivergence and identity

Many adults are discovering their neurodivergence later in life — sometimes through relationship difficulties. We hold space for the process of understanding yourself while simultaneously doing relationship work.

    Masking and authenticity

If one partner masks heavily outside the home, they may have very little left to give in the relationship. We work on understanding this, naming it clearly, and building a home environment where both partners can be more fully themselves.

    FAQs

Do we both need a diagnosis?

No. Many adults are undiagnosed or late-diagnosed. You don't need formal documentation to work with us — we work with who you are.

Can we do individual and couples work simultaneously?

Yes. Many neurodivergent clients work on individual ADHD coaching or individual counselling alongside couples sessions. We can talk about what structure makes sense.

    Is this covered by insurance?

Many extended health plans cover RCC sessions. Check with your provider directly.

    Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes — virtual sessions are available for clients across BC and the Yukon.

We've tried couples therapy before and it didn't help. Why would this be different?

Most couples therapy wasn't designed with neurodivergence in mind. Generic approaches often don't account for the specific dynamics, communication styles, and challenges that neurodivergent couples face. We start from a different place.

Your relationship isn't broken. It just needs a different framework.
